Highlights of the RT Convention: Strategies for Writers

The RT Convention is an abbreviation for the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention. It takes place every year in a different location and attracts readers and authors alike. This year's event occurred in the unique and colorful city of New Orleans.
 RT Booklovers Convention
I had a wonderful time meeting many great online friends in person for the first time as well as seeing familiar faces: Heather McCorkle, Tee Tate, Tracy Clark, Yelena Casale, Tracey Martin, Gretchen McNeil, Cyndy Aleo, Red Hanner/Bryn Greenwood, Clovia Shaw, Shannyn Schroeder, Ava Jae, and more!

While seeing friends, exploring New Orleans, and taking a Ghost Tour made the trip, one of the best parts of the conference was learning new strategies for strengthening writing as a career. Since my school days, I have always been a diligent note-taker. So, I'd like to share some of the highlights of three panels with you. See the descriptions and click the links below for details. Also, be sure to check out Courtney Milan's page as she delievered an excellent workshop about building a Sticky Digital Readership.

Clone Your Book: A successful indie not only works harder, but smarter. While she can't clone herself, she can clone her books. Explore which other formats can provide you with revenue after you've published your book as an e-book. This workshop discusses the merits of print-on-demand, audiobooks, foreign translations, enhanced e-books, and screenplays.

Staying Sane and Rocking the Genres: New York Times & national bestselling authors Alyssa Day, Mari Mancusi, and Kassy Tayler, all multi-published in multiple genres and in both adult and young adult fiction, talk about the challenges of writing, marketing, and promoting to different audiences.

The Writer as Marketer: These days, it isn't enough to just write a compelling novel. Agents and editors are looking for writers who are also engaging potential readers online, building strong virtual communities and using social media to build a platform before they've even gotten published. This panel will discuss how to get started in this scary new digital world, best practices for using social media, balancing the personal and the professional online, and - most importantly - what to do to make sure that your writing doesn't suffer in the process.

What is the best writing career advice you've received?
