Happy Holidays! See You in 2014!

Seasons Greetings! Since it is that time of year for spending the days with family and friends, I'll be taking a blog break until 2014. When I return, I'll have a NA contemporary romance (hopefully) done, a blog redesign uploaded, and Team Ninja ready for the agent round of Pitch Wars! It's going to be a race to the finish of 2013.

Pitch Wars: Mentor Ninja Bio

That special time of year is here again. Epic battles, smack talk, and Twitterpalooza. That's right! It's PITCH WARS! Woot! And now, Tina gets to talk in the third person and convince you once more why it's imperative to choose her as your mentor. And since she loves her bio from last year, she is presenting it all its glory for your decision--and amusement--with a few tweaks.
Tina Moss could sit here and tell you all of the reasons you should pick her as your Pitch Wars mentor, but there’s really only one that matters…she’s a ninja. And she can wield a light saber! Seriously. Ask her agent mates, if you don't believe her. Studying traditional Shotokan Karate for ten years and earning Shodan rank (first degree black belt), she should technically be a samurai. At 5’1” and a half (5’2” on a good day), she can wear the armor well…
However, her stealth-like skills (sorta) and unassuming demeanor (definitely) make her the perfect ninja! She’s even lived in Japan…the land of ninjas! And you never see her coming. As part of Team Ninja she’ll help you sneak in all quiet-like and wipe the floor with the competition! Ninjas don’t lose.
If that isn’t enough to convince you, Tina lists all the other non-ninja stuff here:
  1. Made of awesome. She took a DNA test to be certain.
  2. Master’s degree in English Language and Literature.
  3. Published works include urban fantasy novel, A TOUCH OF DARKNESS and a short story in charity anthology, WINTER WONDERS.
  4. Eleven years teaching English, five years running an academic department, and now a specialist in primary school
  5. Represented by Super Agents, Frances Black and Jennifer Mishler, of Literary Counsel.
  6. Purveyor and crafter of wondrous words in urban fantasy, paranormal romance, romantic suspense and NA contemporary.
  7. Beta reads approximately ten manuscripts per year including works for published authors: LM Preston, Kristie Cook, Brenda Corey Dunne, Danielle DeVor, and more.
  8. Will not stop working with you until your MS, query and pitch shine!
  9.
Wishes, wishes, and wishes galore...

Tina loves working with other writers and seeing them succeed. No over-egos or self-wallowing allowed here. There’s enough room on the shelves and in cyberspace for every writer, including you!
Like what you’ve read? Tina hopes so. If you think you'd make an awesome teammate (see made of awesome above) and you’re ready to be a ninja, here’s what Tina is looking for in the New Adult or Adult market...

  • Urban Fantasy – Kickass main character who isn’t afraid to face inner and outer demons in a rough and tumble city environment. (Favorites: Ilona Andrews, Jeanine Frost, Marjorie Liu)*
  • Paranormal Romance – Feisty heroine and strong heroes please apply. Off the grid mystical creatures falling head over heels hot for each other. (Favorites: Gena Showalter, J. R. Ward, Nalini Singh)*
  • Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic – World-ending? Alternate super scary government take-over? Bleak impossible landscape? Yes! Let's see how your characters deal with the insanity of these worlds. (Favorites: Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth - want to see this brought to adult market)**
  • Historical Romance – Give me your highlanders, knights, dukes and more. Favorite time period is the Middle Ages, but open to reading all eras. (Favorites: Michelle Willingham, Karen Marie Moning, Anita Clenney)
  • Contemporary Romance - In fairness, Tina admits some of the other Pitch Wars mentors have more experience in this area. But, she's currently writing a NA novel in this genre, so she's open to it too and would love to help you develop that story! (Favorites: Jennifer Armentrout as J. Lynn  and Harlequin classics)
*Both genres, especially vampires, angels/demons, and werewolves are a hard sell nowadays, but good story trumps all.

**Another tough sell, but I may have more sway in the new adult and adult markets.

And for game time... SECRET LETTER: A

Does your MS fall outside one of these categories? Not sure if it'll work for the Mentor Ninja in Pitch Wars? No worries. Send Tina a note on Twitter and she'll help determine if it's in her area of interest. Not on Twitter? Use Tina's Contact Me page.

Still not sure whether to choose Tina as your mentor? Perhaps her alter egos will convince you…

DEPENDENT by Brenda Corey Dunne: Cover Reveal

I've had the pleasure of knowing Brenda Corey Dunne for several years now and the privilege of reading her work in its early stages. She's by far one of the most talented authors I know and an absolute gem to the reading and writing community. It's my honor to share the cover of her fantastic contemporary adult novel, DEPENDENT.
Release Date: Summer 2014
Publisher: Jolly Fish Press
Genre:Contemporary

Pre-order: Amazon
Add to TBR: Goodreads

About Dependent
When 45-year-old Ellen Michaels loses her husband to a tragic military accident, she is left in a world of gray. For 25 years her life has been dictated by the ubiquitous They—the military establishment that has included her like chattel with John’s worldly goods—his Dependents, Furniture, and Effects. They—who have stolen her hopes, her dreams and her innocence, and now in mere months will take away the roof over her head. Ellen is left with nothing to hold on to but memories and guilt and an awful secret that has held her in its grip since she was 19. John’s untimely death takes away her anchor, and now, without the military, there is no one to tell her where to go, what to do— no one to dictate who she is. Dependent deals with issues ever-present in today’s service families—early marriage, frequent long absences, the culture of rank, and posttraumatic stress, as well as harassment and abuse of power by higher-ranking officials. It presents a raw and realistic view of life for the lives of the invisible support behind the uniform.

About the Author
Brenda Corey Dunne grew up in rural New Brunswick, Canada. She originally trained as a physiotherapist and worked several years as a Physiotherapy Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force before meeting the love of her life and taking her release.
She completed her first full length manuscript in 2008 as a bucket-list item and since then she has self-published a work of YA historical fiction (TREASURE IN THE FLAME), and has several other manuscripts in various stages of completion. DEPENDENT, an adult contemporary fiction, will be published by Jolly Fish Press in summer 2014. Brenda is represented by Jennifer Mishler and Frances Black of Literary Counsel.

When not working as a physioherapist or writing, Brenda can be found juggling taxi-mom duties, working in the garden or strolling through the horse paddock with a coffee in hand. She currently resides on a small hobby farm in Eastern Ontario (Canada) with her husband and their three children, two horses, a dog, a cat, several chickens and the occasional sheep.

Find her here:

How gorgeous is the cover? Be sure to mark your calendars. This summer is going to be one to remember with DEPENDENT.

Freaky Friday: Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Halloween has come and gone. With it came the release of my debut urban fantasy, A TOUCH OF DARKNESS. It's crazy to think that after all this time my book--I mean, whoa, MY BOOK--is out there in the world. If you've read or plan to read it, I hope you like it! Now, it's time to get back into the normal swing of things around here and that means, Freaky Friday! This week I'm going with the remake of the classic, Invasion of the Body Snatchers!
The opening sequence is freaky enough with the weird snot-like aliens coming to earth. Then, they emerge as flowers after slithering over leaves, but that's not the weird part. A woman walks by and picks one of the flowers as a class comes through with their teacher. The freaky part, however, is the priest sitting on a swing and giving the kids the most serious stink eye ever. If he's not already snatched by one of these aliens, then he should get the award for creepiest horror villain, or seek therapy.
As the movie continues, it turns out that weird dead-pan stares are part of the norm. Although, my vote is still on the priest for the creepiest.

Not far into the film, the heroine suspects something is wrong with her boyfriend. Now, don't get me wrong, if my hubs was acting strange, I'd know right away, but I wouldn't say, "He's the same on the outside, but something inside him is different." Sounds suspiciously too close to the truth. And when she touches his hair, she flips out and backs always from him, only... the audience is made to think nothing is wrong! She just seems to have this epiphany that he's different. Later, we'll find out more (no spoilers).
How to tell your significant other became an alien. See blob.
Soon after, we hear from the Chinese laundry worker, who says, "That not my wife. Different. That not my wife." Again, why would he say this? I don't want to beat a dead horse, but, if your significant other starts acting weird, the first reaction is "Hey, they're acting weird", not "They must be taken over by aliens because that's not so and so".
In the plus column, aside from the snap judgement of the characters, I didn't have any other major gripes. The pace moves fast, so we don't have much boring overture. The spooky scenes are also understated, which is a nice change from the modern over-the-top blood and gore. It's easy to see why this one is a classic (albeit a remake of an earlier classic). It's got the creep factor down to an art.  Besides, we've got Leonard Nimoy! Can't be upset with Spock. And Jeff Goldblum? Why, yes please. He can do no wrong in my book. No, not even Earth Girls are Easy. Don't judge.

Rating: B

PS Pod people! Pod people!

Which is it for you the 1956 original or the 1978 remake? Who are your pod people?
